Day 1 Lima / Iquitos / Heliconia Amazon River Lodge Arrival and reception at our kiosk inside the Iquitos International Airport, Amazon River Expeditions. Then we will take you to our office of operations in the city where you will be given an orientation of our services, according to your particular voucher. Then, we will go to the Port of Bellavista Nanay, where we will board a speed boat to the Heliconia Amazon River Lodge via the Amazon River. During this ride of 01 hour and 15 minutes approximately we will be able to observe the convergence of the brown turbid Amazon River with the dark waters of the Nanay River. We will enjoy the impressive jungle landscape and the rustic small houses of the riverside towns. We will visit a native community where we will have an opportunity to hear about their way of life and to see his customs, dances and handy crafts. Arriving to the Lodge you will be welcoming with a complimentary jungle drink. Allocation of rooms. Lunch. In the afternoon we will start a jungle hike into the Yanamono Reserve, which is a primary rainforest reserve, for approximately 2 hours accompanied by expert guides, where they will identify various botanical species such as the Heliconia plant, medicinal plants and giant trees such as the White silk-cotton tree (Ceiba Pentandra) whose dimensions are so large that 25 persons can circle the giant tree. During this time we will also see various birds such as the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes Aura), Black Fronted Nanbird (Monasa-Atia), etc., and with a little luck we will be able to see small monkeys such as marmosets (saguinus fusicollis) , and The Titi Monkey (Callicebus Mollock Mollock) and the Frailes Monkey (Saimiri Boliviense). Return to the lodge and rest. After observing the Amazonia Sunset, we will take a night boat ride to the Manco Gulch, if the river is high enough, or along the Amazon River where we will enjoy the magical sounds of the jungle and the light of the moon. Or, if it’s a clear night, we can observe the constellations. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge. Day 2 Heliconia Amazon River Lodge Early birdwatching. We will start off very early and go by boat Cáceres Gulch or a similar gulch (if it's high water). We will be looking out for birds such as the Tuki (Jacana Jacana), Ringed Kingfisher (Ceryle-Torquata), Black-Collared Hawk (Busarellus nigricollis), etc. Return to the lodge where a tasty, delicious breakfast will be waiting. During this morning, we will take a small fishing trip into small tributaries of the Amazon River. The most daring can try for Piranhas. During this time we can also have the opportunity to look out for the Pink Amazon River Dolphin (Inia Geoffrensis), they can be very shy. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, we will also be able to see the very impressive giant Victoria Regia (Giant Water Lily) located inside the lakes that are on Yanamono Island (if the water level permits). At night the daring can take a hike around the perimeter of the Lodge to look for tarantulas, fire flies, bats and other jungle nocturnal creatures. Dinner and Overnight at the Lodge. Day 03: Heliconia / Mazan / Sucusari Breakfast at Heliconia Lodge and then transfer to another Lodge located at 18 miles away. Lunch. After a brief rest, a riverboat will take us toward the Mazan trail which marks the shortest distance between the Amazon and Napo Rivers. When we arrive to the Napo River, a riverboat will be waiting for us to take us to the ExplorNapo Lodge. Afternoon hike through non-flooded, terra firme, primary rainforest, including a visit to the ReNuPeRu Medicinal Plant Garden adjoining the lodge. Evening excursion by open boat, along the Sucusari Stream in search of caiman and to enjoy the night sounds and stars of the Southern sky. Dinner by kerosene lamps and overnight in the Lodge. Day 04: Canopy Walkway Early morning bird excursion. Breakfast. Afterwards, trek in the “Canopy Walkway”, a suspended bridge spanning over 1640 feet, connected by 17 platforms on the tree tops and reaching an altitude of more than 121 feet above ground. From here, we will be able to observe the part of the rainforest rarely seen or known by man. Lunch. After a brief rest, excursion in a riverboat along one of the Napo tributaries looking for sloths, birds and having a try at fishing for piranhas. Dinner and spend the night. Day 05: Iquitos/Lima Early morning bird watching by boat or by foot. Breakfast. Morning excursion to visit some of the local river people called “ribereños” whose houses and schools can be seen along the river. They will be pleased to show you their simple way of life as they live along the edge of the Mighty Amazon River. Early lunch. Return to Iquitos by boat and transfer to the airport.
