ADDITIONAL TOURS

CITY TOURS / BELEN MARKET AND MUSEUM

(3 hours approx) – Daily departures – A.M. and P.M.

We will start the tour moving to the Plaza 28 de Julio, and then visit the Belen Street Market, the most popular market in the city in which we will observe the commercial activity with different products from the villages of the interior of the jungle. It will be exciting to observe the great variety of jungle fruits, wild meats of the “mountain” and the great variety of Amazonian fish such as paiche, dorado and goons. We will also walk through the famous “Paquito Passage”, the Belen Market lane known for its exotic medicinal plants, herbal tonics, and aphrodisiacs.
Later we will go to the center of the city to visit the colorful and busy Plaza de Armas, and then on to the Tarapaca and Boulevard Malecón along the river’s edge. We will finish the tour by visiting the famous Historical Museum Boat “AYAPUA” (1906)

Main attractions:

  • Plaza 28 de Julio: The main attraction of this city’s largest plaza is the locomotive Morona Cocha, a legacy of the rubber era. Trains were brought to Iquitos from Europe in 1905, by entrepreneur Mr. Julio Cesar Arana del Águila. The train system was made up of the Moronococha, Sachachorro, and Punchana locomotives, which pulled flatbed cars or boxes to transport the packages of import and export merchandise. The locomotive was also used on Sundays and holidays by the public, and its route was between the streets Omagua (today San Martín) and Jirón Lima (today Prospero).
  • Mercado de Belén: its main attraction is the Paquito Passage, known as the natural pharmacy of the Amazon where we will find the great variety of medicinal plants and special preparations used ancestrally by the Amazonian people.
  • Plaza de Armas: We will reach the Plaza de Armas through Calle Prospero where we will pass by several historical mansions such as Casa Cohen, Chalet Morey, Casa Morey, Casa Irapay and others. In the Plaza de Armas we will see the Obelisk of Heroes and learn its particular history, as well as the surroundings of the Plaza, the Mother Church, the famous Iron House, the Fitzcarrald house, the house, among others.
  • Malecón Tarapaca and Boulevard: The main attraction is the former Hotel Palace, considered the greatest architectural jewel of the City of Iquitos. Its construction began in 1908 and was inaugurated on June 10, 1912. It features an eclectic architectural style. Those responsible for its construction and beautification were the engineer Samuel Young and the Spanish builder José Atimira. Still to this day, we can see a hall, its beautiful tiles and wrought iron that were brought from Europe.
  • Boat Museum Ayapua: On the way to the boat museum we will have the opportunity to take pictures along the Boulevard. We will see the Church of Consolation. We will also see the famous historical Casa Morey, its first owner was the rubber tapper Luis F.Morey. The Historical Boat Museum is aboard the Ayapua Ship, built in Hamburg, Germany (1906). The Boat Museum houses an interesting exhibition dedicated to the rubber era, with exhibitions of the history of navigation, geographers and explorers.

AMAZON FOREVER BIO-PARK

(3 hours approx) – Daily departures : A.M.

Hours of operation: Tuesday  to Sunday from 9 a.m. at 3 p.m.

AMAZON FOREVER BIOPARK It is a Private Conservation Area that preserves 11 hectareas of white-sand forest and aguajal or wetland ecosystems. The area was designed to promote the positive interaction with nature in a funny and playful way.

It has the following spaces:
“AQUARIUM OF ARAPAIMA, ETHNO-BOTANICAL GARDEN, THE FOREST OF HUAYO, WHITE-SAND FOREST, RAFTING IN THE AGUAJAL OR WETLAND”

IQUITOS RIBEREÑO: NATIVE BORA COMMUNITY, PILPINTUWASI FARM, AND FUNDO PEDRITO

We will start with a brief history of the city of Iquitos in the Plaza de Armas to then move to the port of Bellavista where we will take a river boat to navigate the Nanay, Momón and the majestic Amazon River rivers. First, we will visit the Native Community of the Boras, where we will participate in their dances and traditions. Continuing the adventure we next visit “Pillpintuwasi”, a zoo nursery and butterfly farm. There we will enjoy the gardens where communities of butterflies reproduce; and meet a real jaguar, the “otorongo” baptized with the name of Pedro.

Upon returning by boat, we cannot stop marveling at the coming together of two majestic rivers, the Nanay with the mighty Amazon.  With good luck. we will observe the gray and pink river dolphins. To end these tours, we will visit the “Pedrito” farm where we will be able to observe and feed the biggest fish of the Amazon, the “Paiche”, which can grow up to 3 meters long. We will also be able to observe the lizards and other species of the Amazon.

 ISLA DE LOS MONOS WITH FUNDO PEDRITO

(5 hours approx) – Daily departures -A.M.

Transfer to the port and board a river boat to navigate the Amazon River to reach Monkey Island, whose mission is to protect, preserve, and rehabilitate monkeys. There, we will see a variety of species of monkeys of the Amazon area. For example, we will see the spider monkey, better known as the “Maquisapa”; also the “howler” monkey, or Cotomono; and others who are in the Rescue Center. These monkeys live free on the trees, and will often come to play with us. Back to Iquitos we will make a stop in Barrio Florido, where the Pedrito Farm is located and where you can feed the lizards and the biggest fish of the Amazon, the “Paiche”, which can grow up to 3 meters. We will then return to Iquitos and transfer you to your hotel.

AQUARIUM OF ARAPAIMA
It is an educational aquarium that aims to raise awareness regarding to the importance of the preservation of fishery resources, the enforcement of minimum catch sizes and the fishing seasons of Amazonian fish, like the paiche or arapaima.

ETHNO-BOTANICAL GARDEN
This area is home of the most representatives species of Amazonian flora that have been used for our ancestors. The aim is to revalue our traditional knowledge and promote, in children, the sense of belonging to the Amazonian forest.

THE FOREST OF HUAYO
In this area you can find giant wood sculptures and discover the nature through playful activities based on our character Huayo.

WHITE-SAND FOREST
Walking through different paths in the forest, you discover one of the most rare, fragile and important ecosystems of the Amazon, the White-Sand Forests, natural areas that cover only 0.05% of the Amazon.

Currently, these forests are disappearing at an alarming rate, due to the fact that white sand is one of the only construction materials available in the area for urban building. It is therefore imperative to get local people involved in its conservation.

RAFTING IN THE AGUAJAL OR WETLAND
Rowing a handmade craft, you know a very special ecosystem of the Amazon, the aguajales, these play a very important role to mitigate the climate change as they act as store of carbon. The fruit, aguaje, is one of the most nutritious of the tropical, it has five times more vitamin than the carrot, it is estimated that, in Iquitos city, 20 tons of aguaje is consumed per day.
